Lucky Dube Music Quotes

Reggae is not just one message. It is a lot of messages to different people in different situations – reggae is relevant to their situation. Lucky Dube

Musicians have always educated people through music, you know even though now a days a lot of music just talks about sex, women, and drugs. Music I think should be teaching and talking to people about important things in life. Lucky Dube

I write my music about people. I write my music about myself. I write music about real things that are happening to real people. There’s no song that I have written that is just an imaginary thing. So all the things that I write about are things that people relate to, things that have happened to people, one time or another. Lucky Dube

I saw that in South Africa you could not do reggae, as the then apartheid government didn’t like it. It was scary – even listening to Peter Tosh or Bob Marley as you could disappear if the government caught you listening to it. Lucky Dube

The hope of the music is of course, that of getting people together. People have been separated for a long time. I do music for three reasons. I do music to entertain, to educate, and to unite people. That is me and my music. Lucky Dube

I can say I was born a musician. Lucky Dube

I chose music. It got me in trouble with my mother. She wanted a doctor or a lawyer in the family. When she heard that I wanted to do music as a career that wasn’t her idea of a future for me. Lucky Dube

I got very sick and they thought I’m going to die too (talking about the death of his younger brother). I didn’t have a name until I was maybe, about what – six months old. They would just call me the boy or the child. Then I didn’t die and so they said well, he’s very lucky, he’s a very lucky boy. And they called me Lucky. Lucky Dube

Music has that power because music is not like politicians. Music is always there. Politicians come in every four or five years, lie to the people, get what they want at that time, and disappear, but music is there every time. It can change the world. Lucky Dube

I just liked the way of life. What I read about was Rastafarianism being a way of life, not a religion. And that’s what I really liked. Lucky Dube

To me it’s about consciousness, be it socially or politically. It’s basically consciousness. (talking about what it means to be Rastafarian). Lucky Dube
