List of Famous LS Lowry Art Quotes

Some critics have said that I turned my figures into puppets, as if my aim were to hint at the hard economic necessities that drove them. To say the truth, I was not thinking very much about the people. I did not care for them in the way a social reformer does. They are part of a private beauty that haunted me. I loved them and the houses in the same way: as part of a vision. L. S. Lowry

I don’t care a tuppence for what they do in London in the art world. It doesn’t matter to me. I don’t think of it. All I am concerned with is doing my own thing in my own way.. as well as I can. L. S. Lowry

I have been fond of the sea all my life, how wonderful it is, yet how terrible it is. L. S. Lowry

I don’t like his women at all, but they fascinate me, like a snake. That’s why I always buy Rossetti whenever I can. His women are really rather horrible. It’s like a friend of mine who says he hates my work, although it fascinates him. L. S. Lowry

You cannot teach painting because everyone’s color sense is different. But drawing.. you either get it right or wrong. You can tell whether people have drawn from life from their pictures. L. S. Lowry

You don’t need brains to be a painter, just feelings. L. S. Lowry

Most of my land and townscape is composite. Made up; part real and part imaginary … bits and pieces of my home locality. I don’t even know I’m putting them in. They just crop up on their own, like things do in dreams. L. S. Lowry

I’ve a one track mind, sir. Poverty and gloom. Never a joyous picture of mine you’ll see. Always gloom. I never do a jolly picture. L. S. Lowry

I look upon human beings as automatons.. because they all think they can do what they want but they can’t. They are not free. No one is. L. S. Lowry

I am not an artist. I am a man who paints. L. S. Lowry

I am a simple man, and I use simple materials: ivory black, vermilion, prussian blue, yellow ochre, flake white and no medium. That’s all I’ve ever used in my paintings. I like oils … I like a medium you can work into over a period of time. L. S. Lowry

A street is not a street without people.. the composition was incidental to the people. L. S. Lowry
