William Dobell spent much of his later years in the idyllic surrounds of Wangi Wangi on Lake Macquarie, NSW. He often painted the people and life around the lake.
It was after winning the Archibald prize in 1944 and the controversy that followed (with his portrait of Joshua Smith), Dobell moved to Wangi Wangi.
