The
Brett Whiteley studio in Surry Hills, Sydney was the work space and home of the
artist before he passed away in 1992. The atmosphere of the studio has been kept,
with his painting area looking like the artist has just stepped out for a moment.
There are paint spattered floors, walls with quotes and photos that mattered to
Whiteley, art books that the artist used, and music that he listened to playing
in the background.
Whiteley purchased the former T-shirt factory in 1985.
He renovated it to also include an exhibition space and he lived there from 1988
up until his death in 1992. The exhibition space on the lower level was where
Whiteley showed his "Birds" show in 1988.
The Art Gallery of
NSW now manages the Whiteley Studio after the New South Wales Government purchased
the building and several works by the artist.
There are now regularly changing
exhibitions held at the Brett Whiteley studio. There are also drawing classes
and special events held at the building.
Admission to the Brett Whiteley
Studio is now free because of a sponsorship deal with a financial corporation.
Opening
hours are 10am to 4pm, on Saturday and Sunday.
