+ I'm surprised
at the reaction to the "Nurse" paintings. Ive never felt that
I had to put out work that I actually liked.. just because its out there
doesnt mean that I have to stand behind it.
+ By rephotographing
a magazine page and then developing the film in a cheap lab, the photos came out
very strange. They looked like they could be my photos, but they weren't.
+
I dont see any difference now between what I collect and what I make. Its
become the same. What Im collecting will, a lot of times, end up in my work.
+
It would be strange for me to think Im being ripped off, because thats
what I do! In those days, it was called "pirating." Now they call it
"sampling."
+ I think celebrity can be dangerous. The big advantage
is that I no longer have to worry about whether or not I can afford to buy that
extra paintbrush when I'm in the art supply store. The other advantage is that
I can take time to experiment. I can fail a bit more often. I don't have to put
out the work that I don't like.
+
Living in New York feels like you're always inside.. inside buildings, inside
subways.
+
The subject comes first, the medium second. +
A lot of its experimental, spontaneous. Its about knocking about in
the studio and bumping into things.
