About the Self Portrait at the Age of 34
Painting
Self
Portrait at the Age of 34 by Rembrandt van
Rijn is one of a number of self portraits
the artist completed throughout his life.
It shows the artist dressed in an outfit that
would have been worn one hundred years before
Rembrandt painted this work.
Inscribed on the Rembrandt self portrait is
the word "Conterfeycel" which is
an old Dutch word for "portrait".
The self portrait was bought by the National
Gallery in 1861 and is still in their collection.
The National Gallery is located in Trafalgar
Square, London, England.
