If this portrait of Dora Maar wasn't so colorful it wouldn't look out of place stuck to the Guernica mural of the same year. Was Picasso transferring the social ills of the world onto the portraits of his lover or was he simply capturing Maar as she was? Perhaps it was a bit of both.
