Fred Williams was a modern Australian painter of
the landscape. At a time when the Australian bush
was considered to be a tired and old fashioned subject
to paint, Williams took on the challenge of depicting
the landscape. The painted depicted the Australian
bush like no artist had done before him. Williams
forced Australians to look at their landscape with
new eyes.
Fred Williams was born in 1927 in the Victorian
capital city of Melbourne, Australia. Williams received
art training from the National Gallery School in
Melbourne where students were taught to draw and
paint in an academic or traditional way. He also
received training from the artist George Bell and
was very influenced by him during his student years.
