About the Triptych Painting
Francis Bacon used the format of the triptych
throughout his career. The figure in this
painting is probably his lover male
John Edwards. In the first panel the figure
is struggling on the toilet, bent over in
pain. The central panel shows the figure in
a more contemplative pose, perhaps regretting
the excess alcohol consumed. The dark shadows
coming from the doorway are menacing, and
also play an important part in the overall
composition of the painting. In the third
panel the figure is bent over and vomitting
in the sink.
"My painting is a representation of
life, my own life above all, which has been
very difficult. So perhaps my painting is
very violent, but this is natural to me."
